The Origins and Traditions of Mother's Day

Mother's Day is an honoured tradition with roots in ancient festivals dedicated to mother goddesses.

In Christianity, it was associated with honouring the Virgin Mary, while in the UK, it evolved from the 16th-century Christian practice when children who had left their families to work in domestic service were allowed to go to their home – or “mother” – church.

The UK date of this celebration is rooted in the Christian observance of Lent, with Mothering Sunday taking place on the fourth Sunday, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.

However, throughout different countries the date Mother's Day is celebrated on does vary.

In America, Mother’s Day began in 1907. I lady name Anna Jarvis who was the daughter of a peace activist who treated wounded soldiers in the American Civil War, campaigned for a day to honour the role played by mothers. She choose the second Sunday in May, as that was when she held a service to honour her mother when she died.

Others countries celebrate Mother's Day on the same day as International Women's Day (March 8th) these countries include, including Russia, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.

In France however, it is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of May, but it is moved to the first Sunday of June if it coincides with Pentecost day.

This day has universally become a time to honour and celebrate our mothers and mother figures, showcasing gratitude and love through gifts, acts of kindness, and spending time together. Different cultures have their unique ways of celebrating, but the core essence remains the appreciation of motherhood.

However you're celebrating this year, we at Bunchi have the perfect delicious food and drinks to ensure you show her how truly valuable she is!
